Welcome to PhelsumaWeb.co.uk

The genus Phelsuma consists of around 60 taxa (species and sub-species) of day geckos, including several recent additions. The taxonomy of this genus is highly debated, with traditional morphology based taxonomy and more recent molecular based techniques complementing and contrasting with each other in equal measure. With only a single exception, phelsuma are endemic to Madagascar and a small number of Indian Ocean islands. The single exception in this case is Phelsuma andamanensis the Andaman Islands day gecko which inhabits the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal. i

Phelsuma as a genus face a variety of threats to their survival, including habitat destruction and the introduction of predators and non-native competitors. For this reason genus conservation is very important. For this, and other reasons there is an almost blanket export ban on species from Madagascar and the surrounding islands. For further information on the Cites status of any species, please see the Cites information section.
